Buttrfield: Good evening. I'm just back from a trip to the west coast… ..(and Hawaii) … so I'm nicely tanned and rested up. Let's look at questions now… If you are a beginner in machine language, it's my opinion that you DON't need a full scale.. "symbolic" assembler to start. Here's why: When you're just starting, you have to learn many many rules… …and an assembler just calls for more and more rules to be learned; ..that's the last thing you need. I'd prefer to see you use a "tiny" (non-symbolic) assembler… such as is built in to any of the many public domain MLM's… (Machine Language Monitors). If you happen to have a Commodore 128, there's one built it. After you pick up a little speed, then you can buy or obtain a more powerful assembler… …at that time, you'll know what's it's good for and how helpful it can be.
QuestionSome programmers put colons in front of a BASIC line. Why is that?
Buttrfield: It's usually done to give the effect of "indentation"… ..this can make the program more readable, and allows you to pick out loops, etc… The colon has no effect on the program.
Questioncan you tell me if the 1902A will work with any other computers besides the 64/ 128?
Buttrfield: I haven't used the 1902, but assume that it works as a conventional RGBI monitor… …as well as a composite monitor. If so, it is usable on many (most?) other computers, ..and your Video recorder, too. Watch for one thing: RGBI (red/green/blue/intensity) is NOT ..NOT quite the same thing as RGB (red/green/blue), which last is what the Amiga uses, so you… can't use EVERY monitor on EVERY computer.
Questionhow do i get started in machine language with the c128
Buttrfield: I suppose the best method is two-part … buy a book and also get a friend to help, if you can… ..Machine language isn't really HARD, but it does call for some new ideas, and it's hard to take ..that first step. You wouldn't be surprised to hear that I think my book is a good one for beginners. 🙂
QuestionCan you tell me when the 1764 will be finally released??? And how complicated will the "switching" be to use it – I heard something like that could make the 1764 not worth the money!!!!
Buttrfield: It was announced as a firm product last month, so it should be coming soon… The 64 does not have STASH and FETCH commands such as are found on the 128, so a Basic… interface is not as easy as might be hoped (I think it can be done with care)… HOWEVER … commodore will be releasing a program called a RAMDos (or is it a DOSRAM?) that will ..allow simple Basic programs to use the Expansion RAM as if it were an extra disk drive. I've seen an early copy of RAMDos and it works, although the version I saw wasn't "ready". The other part of the question is: what about commercial software? We'll need to wait and see. Certainly, existing spread sheets and word processors don't include handlers for Expansion RAM… we'll need to wait for the upgrades. There are now 23 questions waiting, so it may be a wait before YOUR question comes up.
QuestionHi, could you reccomend a good voice command module that I could use to program basic with?
Buttrfield: This question is from LUVSOCCER, and if you have a good answer, you might send him E-Mail… I don't know if Magic Voice is still around (some users quite liked it)… …or there's a software system called SAM that will talk quite well. Any suggestions for LUVSOCCER?
Questionwhat do you think the best assembler wou ld be for a beginner?
Buttrfield: (This question was answered earlier … guess I forgot to echo the QUESTION. Ooops..there it is)
Questionjim i have an mps 1000 that prints only upper case graphics when i try to print the buffer from my volks 6480 or direct from the screen whether i have caps lock on or off how can i correct this????
Buttrfield: (Above question from TimT7)… I haven't worked with the MPS 1000 so can't say… …many Commodore printers require you to open a channel to secondary address 7 so as to switch ..to text mode from graphics. Any better suggestions? Send E-Mail or OLM to TimT7.
QuestionWhat Is The Highest Storage Capacity For A Commodore Compatitable Hard Disk Drive That You Know Of???….
Buttrfield: I've handled units with 20 megabytes, but don't see any reason why more could not be used… …problem with HUGE disks is (1) the massive directory; and (2) the backup/security problem.
QuestionCan you tell me if the rumors of the death of the 128 are true? And if Commodore is still willing to stand behind it???
Buttrfield: I don't believe it, and last month asked the president of Commodore Canada about the rumors… …he said "No way" and sounded surprised that anyone would imagine so… It's likely that Commodore will upgrade and enhance the machine… (example, the 128D with built-in drive demonstrated at CES last month)… ..but it's selling WELL and Commodore is not THAT dumb.
QuestionCan you tell me some of the features of the new amiga machines and the price ranges?
Buttrfield: No official Commodore statement yet, but… COMPUTE! March 1987 has announced details of a new Amiga – the 2000 – ahead (as far as I know) of any press release from Commodore. It features: –seven expansion slots; –three drive ports; –large power supply; –price under $1,500; –fully software compatible with A1000; –front panel room for 3 disk drives; –larger keyboard (95 keys); –facilities for IBM card, other stuff. (if this goes by too fast, you may scroll back with the key). 42 questions are now waiting. ..the current question was input at 10:05.
QuestionMr. Butterfield, where can I get more info on the C-128's 8563,80-coloumn video chip?
Buttrfield: The Programmer's Reference Guide contains a formal technical description… It's written in a kind of jargon, if you aren't used to reading that kind of stuff, but… it's the most authentic source. Otherwise,… you might try the Abacus book "C128 Internals" which also discusses the chip and gives some… sample programs.
QuestionWhy are there so many rumors concerning the 128 and the new Amigas? Will the 128 die? Are the new Amigas IBM and/or C= 64/128 compatible?
Buttrfield: Some rumors are misunderstandings. Some are malicious… The new Amigas may be fitted with IBM cards that will give "good" compatibility… I haven't yet seen a 64/128 emulator, although they are rumored to be ready.
QuestionWhat do you think of Commodore vs. Apple
Buttrfield: Commodore machines are more fun and cheaper… Apple machines are better supported, especially with choice of software… It's my biased opinion that Commodore users are more fun than Apple users.
QuestionIs the 1080 Amiga monitor both comp/RGB
Buttrfield: Think it's only RGB. the Amiga has a composite output for users who want to use their TV sets… (..or, more likely, their video recorders).
QuestionHow many languages are available for the 128???
Buttrfield: Gosh, I suppose a lot. Basic is built in, as is machine language (of course)… but I've heard of C, Forth, Pascal, COMAL, and I'm sure there are lots of others… …many of these are commercial packages, of course.
QuestionHave you written any books on ML programming?
Buttrfield: Interesting you should ask… "Machine Language for the Commodore 64, 128, and Other Commodore Computers", by Jim Butterfield, a Brady book published by Prentice Hall Press, One Gulf and Western Plaza, New YorkNY 10023. Local booksellers might want to trace it by the ISBN number, which is 0-89303-652-8. If you want C128 data, be sure to get this revised edition.
QuestionWhat do you suggest for a first monitor for people who are retiring their t.v.s?
Buttrfield: Depends on what you want to do… For general 64 and graphics work, the Commodore monitors are fine; (and commodore lead the price break that brought their prices down); For things like word processing and spread sheets, you might prefer a black-and-white hi res ..monitor, which gives a crisper image for long hours of use. You might ask opinions on one of the CIN boards.
QuestionIs the 128 DOOMED??
Buttrfield: Naaah. It's picking up speed. Lotsa memory, great speed, 80 columns … good stuff.
QuestionI have a program(Hacker) that won't load with my 1571(even in 1541 mode). I have no problem loading with my 1541 drive. A ny suggestions?
Buttrfield: Haven't tried HACKER on the 1571. The 1571 is usually pretty good. Any suggestions on HACKER? (Question from "DWE"). ..or ask on the GAME board of CIN.
QuestionCan you tell me if software developers are starting to recognize the 128, for development of software – including games!
Buttrfield: There are signs of improvement, but the big thrust so far is on commercial software… where the 80 columns and extra memory makes a STRONG showing.
Comment******poof*****
Buttrfield: (Did someone just vanish?)
QuestionAre you familar with the Gemini II and is there a way to get double density graphics with Geos….?
Buttrfield: Familiar only in general. GEOS is set up to dump… …"screen pixels" to a printer, so doubt you can get better resolution if it's not on the screen ..in the first place. {To make a comment on the subject at hand, you CAN send me an OLM … BUT be careful, it slows .. ..me down GREATLY}
CommentGood evening Jim…long time…David Bradley here just dropped in to see how you were and to tell you that Xetec sent me an update disk for the hard drive and all is almost 100% now, eh!
Buttrfield: Dave uses his hard disk for a bulletin board system, and seems quite happy.
QuestionWhat is the porpuse of this?
Buttrfield: You ask, and I'll answer … if I can. (…?? to learn how to spell purpose ??? …)
QuestionIs it possible to have a sprite on the screen while simultaneously accessing an RS232 device? (such as a modem)
Buttrfield: It's not a good idea. Technically, each sprite slows the computer slightly… …so if you have 'em, you might get poor transmission… ..ever notice that the disk won't LOAD right if you have lots of sprites?
Questionwhy does my 1670 make an awful noise when key is pressed to get online?
Buttrfield: Not sure exactly what noise you mean, but it's probably the "carrier" screech… …after a while, you'll find it reassuring, since it tells you that all is OK.
Questioncan you detail the problems that the C64 has with the RS-232 port and the serial port with data communication. I have read a bit about it, but don't really understand what the exact problem is!
Buttrfield: Have to make it brief here. Essentially: timing… ..both RS232 and the serial bus depend critically on exact timing and they can interfere with.. each other.
QuestionWhy is it when you purchuse a new disk drive , the alignment is out . I have three Commodore drives ( 2-1571 & SX-64) and have had all three serviced due to mis-alignment.
Buttrfield: Might occur in shipping. Might be a retailer recycling returned units.. (hoping you don't spot it). It should not happen, and get back to the retailer quickly if it does… …while your warranty is still in force.
QuestionWill you be in S.F., CA Feb 20-22?
Buttrfield: Yup.
Questionany exciting developments from commodore in the future besides AMIGA mr. butterfl
Buttrfield: RAM Expansion, I think, will develop new support software… The 3-1/2 inch disks will soon be out… ..Not sure what else is about to happen, but good new software keeps comin' (Big DAS sez … "expensive" developments is more to the point"…
CommentI have heard that the new pocket series stuff will take advantage of the 1764… Have not seen…just "heard", eh!
Buttrfield: Good. The expansion isn't tooo useful without the programs…
Questionwhat do you load for pitstop ?
Buttrfield: Sorry, don't understand the questiion.
QuestionI dont really understand the purpose of the 1764 – will it just act as an extra disk drive or will it add memory to the 64 so it will be able to use more complicated programs – with better applications and graphics?
Buttrfield: In one sense, it will just act as a super-fast disk… ..but that can make a WHALE of a difference to what programs can do. I wrote something in a recent COMPUTE!s Gazette about some of the (tech) uses .. it might give .. ..you some ideas. (Whoever asked the pitstop question … send E-Mail to "Big DAS", who can answer). Wow! 70 questions stacked up! We'll never get throught them all!! I'll make my answers as brief as I can.
QuestionWhat is your opinion on Pirating? And the cost of commercial software over $50 Do you blame people for copying?
Buttrfield: You gotta live with your own conscience. Many software houses are unfair in one sense or another (not all)… Many users are unfair in the way they treat suppliers, too (not all)… We all must learn to live with each other … sensibly.
QuestionHow are ml programs saved as BASIC code?
Buttrfield: Obvious way … make the bytes into DATA statements and save them… More subtle … "link" Basic to the ML and save as a "block". Easier done that said, once you… ..get the trick of it.
QuestionWhen will the 128 version of GEOS be ava ilable?
Buttrfield: Don't know. Snoop the GEOS board.
Comment_____ HELP _____
Buttrfield: I feel that way, sometimes, too.
QuestionWill there be a GEOS version for the 128 using the 1581?? That is if there really is a 1581..
Buttrfield: Berkeley seems to be in touch with the market, so I think: YES. And Commodore have ANNOUNCED the 1581. They MUST produce it now.
QuestionHOW DO YOU DISSABLE THE RUN STOP/ RESTOR E KEY?
Buttrfield: There's a POKE to a vector on the 64. I like POKE 808,234. (A 1581 is Commodore's newly annouced 3-1/2 inch disk drive).
QuestionI sometimes have problems entering basic programs in my 128 in 64 mode using Load ""8,1 command. Could this be a hardware problem?
Buttrfield: Nope. The syntax should be something like: LOAD "0:PROGRAM",8,1 … the 0: sometimes helps.
QuestionWill GEOS 128 use all 128K power?
Buttrfield: I hope so. And it should recognize and use RAM expansion, too.
Questionwhats the difference between the 300 and
Buttrfield: ..and what?
QuestionWhy isn't my 1526 Commodore printer compatible with the 'Print Shop'? I have tried several times to use the utility, but the printer goes off in a world of it's own!! Maybe you can tell me something I'm doing wrong, or maybe even a helpful "sys" command to put in before i boot!! Also, my brother has a C-128 with 1571 drive and OKIDATA120 printer. He has the commodore"jane" program, and it will not print graphics, text or otherwise.Only one type of text will print.(the basic typewriter text) Another note, I am using a C-64 with
Buttrfield: Long question. The 1526 uses a "different" kind of graphics from most printers… … it can be done (as with GEOS) but the software house has to produce the driver. This question from PAUL P11 … would you send him info if you have it?
Question1200 baud modem
Buttrfield: (Ah! the rest of the question about, difference between 300 and…!) The 1200 baud modem can send and receive information faster. If you are on line a lot, it will.. ..save you money.
QuestionJim, is there anything we can do about CPM on the 64. I have an 8 pin 64 that works with my cartridge.
Buttrfield: Sorry, but 64 CP/M was always quite limited in scope and.. won't work at all with some 64's. ..try asking around on the CIN boards .. you may get something… ..but you'll never get the system to SING.
QuestionI HAVE A CBM 64 / 1660 modem. How can I telecommunicate with my pals 128(in 64) He has 1660 modem also. Can we use the "COMMON SENSE" software???
Buttrfield: Yes, absolutely. Communications lines have a "universal language" – ASCII – and will communicate very nicely.
CommentThe Lt. Kernal comes with 20 megs, but the fellows that made it said you can use a 60 or 80 meg drive if you are so inclined, eh!
Buttrfield: This further to the question on hard disk capacities.
QuestionIs the Amiga 1000 'dead'?
Buttrfield: Nope. It's compatible with the new 2000 and should be good for a long long time. (Talk about a haste to bury? The 2000 isn't out yet!)
QuestionWill a MIDI interface cartridge left in the expansion port interfere with telecommunications and is it allright to leave the cartridge and a modem in all the time ?
Buttrfield: There shouldn't be any problem so long as your power supply can carry the load.
QuestionHAVE ANYONE HEARD ANYTHING MORE ON THE RUMOR OF UPDATING 128? WHAT ELSE WOULD IT HAVE??
Buttrfield: The visible update is Commodore's shoing of the 128D… (builtin disk and detachable keyboard)… One hears rumors of a 256K version, but no clear view right now.
QuestionI've been told that the 1700 and 1750 memory expansions can work on the 64, is this true to your knowledge?
Buttrfield: They WILL work on many 64's, BUT DON'T DO IT… …your power supply cannot carry the load and you may blow chips on your computer.
QuestionCan I add a reset button to my C-64? So I wont have to turn it off so much? Thanks! 🙂
Buttrfield: Yes. There are several commercial versions around… ..some hook to the expansion port, some the the serial bus.
QuestionWhen is the new drive 1851 coming out.
Buttrfield: I think it's a 1581, and my guess is within a month or so… …despite doubters, once Commodore make a PUBLIC press release, they… ..are usually close to shipping.
Questionhow do you do subscripts and superscript on the C64 with easy script with a okima te 10 printer? All the manuals dont help .
Buttrfield: This question from PAJARITO. I don't know the printer and the software well enough to comment. Anyone had experience here?
QuestionWhere can I get info on a BAR code reader for a C-64?
Buttrfield: I've heard of them being developed, but have not seen one for sale… This question from CITIED W … send him/her a note if you know.
QuestionWhere can I get a non-commodore 128 power supply likes the ones that some companies sell for the 64. also what do you think of PSI's new Fleet System 4 software?
Buttrfield: Don't know, GregoryM2 … on either question. Ask on the CIN boards.
QuestionJim, would you buy a 1750 RAM expander or a 2nd 1571?
Buttrfield: I'd buy the 1750 RAM because I'm an optimist, and feel sure that LOADS of programs will be coming ..along. The RAM Expansion gives you speed that a second drive can't match.
Questionsir, why do you think that commodore is not 'suporting' the C/PM mode on the C=128 as would be expected?
Buttrfield: Commodore, I think, take the view that they make the boxes and it's up to others to do the.. programs. They expect that the large CP/M software pool should supply the need. (Anyone with opinions on the above, send 'em to James B79).
QuestionCommodore better do some advertising to get back the confidence in people buying the 128 – or they are going to go to other machines!! Just wanted to comment.
Buttrfield: Don't know what Commodore's advertising program is right now… …but would also hope to see renewed effort in support & service… (users DO notice).
CommentThe 128 is a fine machine…remember how long it was before the best stuff came out for the 64. It is just coming out NOW! 4 years later, eh! Support for the 128 will come…
Buttrfield: I agree 100%.
QuestionWhy aren't there any games for the 128??? And will there ever be??
Buttrfield: Hard to say. Because most games are small enough to fit in a 64? Because games writers don't think enough 128 types are buying? don't know.
QuestionWhy are Apple machines better supported? What is wrong with Commodores marketing?
Buttrfield: In part, it's a question of money. Apple charge LOTS more, so can support more… ..But I'm with you. I'd be pleased to see stronger support and service.
QuestionIf you can use a tv on the amiga – why cant you use the 1902a in composite mode??
Buttrfield: Good question. Darned if I know.
QuestionDoes commodore plan to widen its selection of software?
Buttrfield: A few years back, Commodore was in the software business… ..no more. They are now standing back and letting "the market" do its thing. (TREKER asks for the POKE to disable RUN/STOP and RESTORE on the 128… I haven't got my… ..referce on hand here. Can anyone who has it send it to TREKER?)
Questionhave you taken a good look at the atari st (i used lower case on perpuse), and how dose it compare to the AMIGA?
Buttrfield: Doesn't cost as much. Doesn't do as much.
QuestionAny chance the 128 will be able to run . IBM software?
Buttrfield: Greatly doubt it.
QuestionWhy is Commodore the only business mach ine company in the world that has the least support for it's personal computer s?
Buttrfield: It's easy to be bitter when you feel hard done by … BUT … .. have you ever talked to some OTHER users of lower-priced computers and heard THEIR stories? I'd like to see more support … but at the low prices that Commodore charge, you must give… ..them a little allowance on this.
QuestionWHERE CAN I GET PASCAL??? ARE THERE ANY COMPUTER SHOWS THAT THE PUBLICIC IS ALLOWED TO???
Buttrfield: Not sure of commercial sources (this from TREKER). There are many computer fests that the public can attend… ..the next one is in San Fracisco on the 19-21 Feb.
QuestionIs the 1541 best storage device for C-64
Buttrfield: In some ways, it's the ONLY device if you need compatibility with a wide range of programs. You gotta know what you want to depart from the "standard".
QuestionWhy is each successive Commodore machine totally incompatable with the former mod els?
Buttrfield: It's NOT that bad. You could have an early Tandy TRS-80 machine…. The Amiga is the only "total" break in compatibility.
QuestionFor the C-64, what is the BEST (most powerful, feature-rich, etc.) a. tele- communications software and b. DBMS ?
Buttrfield: Gosh, I've played with several but don't have a favorite. … Why don't you ask on the CIN Telecommunications board, Bearcat?
Questiondoes the 64 have a long future??
Buttrfield: THE 64 FOREVER!!!!!!! (It's selling more stongly than ever).
Questionwhat, if any, are the real differences between the Original C-64 and the C-64C
Buttrfield: Other than the shape and the extra software packed in the box, … …it's technically identical in function.
QuestionDid you have your answer to the Machine Language book pre-recorded as a function? It was very fasr!
Buttrfield: Yes I did. I'd hate to the the IBSN number wrong.
CommentThe 128 has some great public domain terminal programs on it! It will not die…it will not sell all that well until the price drops a bit though…still just a bit high for a lot of people.
Buttrfield: We still have 63 questions remaining, and I doubt we'll make it through 'em all… The current question was submitted over 50 minutes ago… So let's get at 'em!!!
QuestionJim, can you tell us if you have seen the 1581 and if you have seen the 1764.
Buttrfield: Yes on the 1581 but haven't played with it. No on the 1764, but have played with the RAMdisk software… (which works fine on my 1750 RAM expansion ).
CommentHacker: Try loading 0:HACKER. The 1571 defaults to side 2 of the disk.
Buttrfield: This to the earlier question on HACKER.
QuestionDoes commodore plan to produce a memory board of some sorts to expand the present memory of the c64?
Buttrfield: The 1764 memory expansion module will be the expansion…. …It comes with a new power supply to handle the extra load.
Questioncan you suggest a source to fill in the holes in 'Mapping the C64'?
Buttrfield: Depends on what you're looking for. The Transactor publishes a book called,… "The Inner Space Anthology", which is complete but not detailed… COMPUTE! publishes "BASIC TOOLKIT"… Abacus publishes "INSIDE THE 64"… …you'll find what you're looking for in one of those, I'm sure.
QuestionI've trouble gettting my printer to prin t color from geos
Buttrfield: Haven't heard of problems on that before, you might ask on CIN… This question from MERLY, if anyone wants to make suggestions.
QuestionWhat is your opinion of the Seikosha SP-1000 VC printer?
Buttrfield: Haven't used it much, but Seikosha seem to make OK stuff. (question from CLB).
QuestionIs the C=64/1541/MPS-801 doomed for ulti mate and utter extinction as goeth the VIC-20 et al?
Buttrfield: Who sez the VIC-20 is extinct? Slightly orphaned, but there are still lots hummin'!! The C64 is still going strong. It will be around for a while.
QuestionWhat is the largest hard drive that will work with the C-64? and Who makes it? Do you know the price?
Buttrfield: Dave Bradley commented a while back of an 80 megabyte being possible… …I've used a 20 megabyte and they seem common… I'm no good on prices (we see 'em differently in Canada).
QuestionDO YOU KNOW OF a GOOD!! BBS???
Buttrfield: TREKER, you ask this on the Telecomms board and you will be SWAMPED with answers. Sez on this piece of paper: XETEC, 2804 Arnold Rd., Salina, Ks 67401 913-827-0685.
Questiondo you know the phone number for xetec or the address, because I was interested in their new hard drive(FISCAL ENT.'s) but have no way to order it from them, I'm also in Canada, so I have no idea how to contact them….can you help?
Buttrfield: (see answer before question above).
QuestionWill current 128 owners be allowed to trade in thier 128 for the new 128D??
Buttrfield: You might be able to work out something with a dealer, but doubt that Commodore would do it.
QuestionCan the + or – on the C128 numeric keypad be changed to a * or /?
Buttrfield: Yes, in software, but it's a LOT of work and may lead to program incompatibilities. (You COULD do a hardware mod, but might be problems.. software is better).
QuestionAre you aware of any good BASIC software development packages (or ones coming) for BASIC 7.0, I use GNOMEKIT 128 and it is a good editor, and what do proffesional programmers use.
Buttrfield: I use a variant of (COMPUTE!s) MetaBasic, which does all I need… …not sure what else is available right now. (Question above from Bill C128)
QuestionI have seen spartan advertised in Compute and was wondering IF it is 100% compatible with the apple2 +
Buttrfield: Haven't used it, but should be very close since it uses a hardware clone emulation.
QuestionIs there a SAVE"@0:…" bug? Cause?
Buttrfield: Yes. It's rare, but happens. Caused by a "lost disk buffer". …will be fixed in new 1541 ROM, I'm told. The Transactor wrote it up about a year ago.
QuestionMr. B, if your are aware of the problem in lost of data on the RS232 line during disk i/o…do you know a way around it to allow disk i/o AND no loss of data on RS232 at the same time??? (C64/128 problem)
Buttrfield: It MIGHT be done with very careful timing… …but many packages just suspect communications while the disk is in motion and vice versa… ..it helps to know that the problem is most critical when READING from disk, not when writing.
QuestionIs ther a GEOS driver for Legend printer
Buttrfield: Don't know. There might be (perhaps under another name). This question from B DING. ..You might ask on the GEOS board.
QuestionJim..knowing that the commodore 1541 is very slow. with that in mind would it be possable to speed it up fast enough to use a 2400 bps modem…I know that no one makes a 2400 bps modem for the C= would it be possable if there was
Buttrfield: Maybe, but I have doubts. The main problem on 2400 baud is that the timing gets quite… critical on the communications side. Don't think it's a problem on getting it from disk (you ..can always read ahead and buffer), but 2400 bps is DELICATE. (PICKY people say 2400 BPS is more correct terminology than 2400 BAUD).
QuestionWill the "new" c128 differ internally from the present one?
Buttrfield: Nope. The 128D is used in Europe now, and it's the same.
QuestionIs there any foolproof way to make a copy of a program so that I can have a backup for my archive purposes? Is there any foolproof way to make a copy of a program so that I can have a backup for my archive purposes?
Buttrfield: Redundancy is one way. Many programs do careful error checking as they copy, and they make for a safer backup system. I have a utility called COPY-ALL that may be useful in this way.
QuestionIf you were going to buy a program to align a 1541, which would you buy, or would you?
Buttrfield: I'm quite impressed with "1541 Physical Exam", by Cardinal… It does the job VERY cleverly in software with little need for instrumentation.
QuestionAny advantage to a 3-1/2 in. diskette?
Buttrfield: More capacity, physically stronger, faster. (and might more easily be built-in in the future).
QuestionI have finished your book M/L for Commod ore 64 & still do not know how to write my own programs in mach. lang. is there another book that could help me to understand it more completely ??? I have been able to copy the programs in the book ,save them in mach. lang. and run them. I can save them to disk & load them successfully. but still don't know how to write my own programs.
Buttrfield: It may be a good time to pick apart a few other people's ML programs to see how they work… …and how to modify them. You learn better in some kind of project than just moving on to a more advanced book. You should now be able to input, output and do simple calculation … surely you can devise a… small project to try out on your own now? I suspect that what's lacking now is confidence.
Commentooops I own an sx-64
Buttrfield: Nice machine.
QuestionWhat is the 1764?
Buttrfield: It's a RAM Expansion module (256K of extra memory) that plugs into the expansion port … … and should be available soon.
QuestionWhat issue did you write about the 1764?
Buttrfield: Last month's COMPUTE's GAZETTE (Feb, I think) … I wrote about the 1750 and the 128, but… …the principles of what expansion can do are similar… ..unfortunately, the programs I gave won7t work on the 64 because I use Basic 7.0 commands.
Questionwhat magizine is better run, compute, or commodore mag.?
Buttrfield: BROWSE!! Everyone has a different opinion.
QuestionJim..commodore keeps comming out with new systems that make the old ones look bad for example the 128 over the 64 and the 64 over the vic 20 do think that commdore should do this or just make expansions to add to the old systems.. i know this is kinda a dumb question but we were discussing this subject the other day
Buttrfield: In this tech age, you can't stand still or you'll get buried. Commodore got burnt with the Plus-4, which had poor compatability, so they have been doing… better since them.
QuestionWhat is maximum K a C-128 can hold. And where would I purchased the expansion sold?
Buttrfield: 512K is the biggest RAM expansion available … it can be bought from… any Commodore dealer. If you need more than that, you might think of a hard-disk based system.
QuestionWhy do companies price thier software so high when it costs onlya few dollars to
Buttrfield: Initial development cost … risk … advertising … wholesale and retail markup … …and (non-pirate) market size.
Questioni have an abacus basic 64 comiler can i write programs and change them into mach. lang. programs with this compiler?
Buttrfield: A Basic "compiler" usually converts programs into an "intermediate" language that runs faster… It's closer to machine language, but not completely there.
CommentPirating can never be condoned. The pro- grams are the property of the owner who have the right to charge whatever they want. The alterntive is not to buy.
Buttrfield: In general, I agree completely. But … suppose a software house has gone broke and somebody… …wants a copy of the program that can no longer be purchased?… It's hard to be completely rigid on the matter. But YOU know what's right and wrong. (I'm talking to YOU) (Sorry, not YOU, but the other people here).
QuestionDeluxe Video on my AMIGA gives good output on the video output as seen on a monitor, but the playback from
Buttrfield: (I think this is part of a question…) (Hmmm, can't find the other part). If the video is good going into your VCR and not good coming out, I gotta suspect the VCR.
QuestionHow would I hang up my 1670 from BASIC? I have tried this (assume that the modem channel has already been opened) FOR X=1 TO 3 PRINT #1,"+"; FOR Y=1 to 100:NEXT Y (small delay) NEXT X PRINT#1,"ATH" . This does not seem to do it. Can you suggest anything? Thanks…
Buttrfield: I'd have to go digging through the manual for details, and no time right now… …but I seem to recall that PRINT#1,"+++" disconnects most anything. Doesn't the magazine publish some sort of guide? would be "set window top"… , "set graphics mode"… ..but there should be a ref in the publication.
QuestionWhat is ment by NMI (none maskable interrupt). I thought that it ment it was an interrupt you could not stop (or mask) (like the restore key) But you can kill that.
Buttrfield: A ML programmer could say SEI (set Interrupt Disable) to stop IRQ from busting in … ("the interrupt has been masked") … but can't do that with NMI… Any interrupt can be killed by disconnecting the source signal.
QuestionJim, what is coming up in SF?
Buttrfield: Vendor displays, seminars, user groups, flea markets, and general good times… Feb 19 to 21.
QuestionWhat does & mean in a program listing I know what & & mean but can't figure out what & mean or ??
Buttrfield: Sorry, missed echoing this question. Answered above, I think.
QuestionDo you know much about the 1581?
Buttrfield: I've only seen it briefly, and read the press release. Faster, more capacity.
QuestionHave you seen the 128D? I am thinking about getting a C-128. Should I wait till the 128D comes out. I like the idea of a detachable keyboard and more built in memory.
Buttrfield: There's no more built-in memory, but it can be handy… (more portable?) to have a built-in disk. It's popular in Europe.
QuestionWith the present fallout in computers… what do you think of the future of the computer industry?
Buttrfield: The worst shakeouts are over.
Questionwhen i try to enter the monitor to write in machine language it just says break all the way down the screen! what do i do! i have a 128 and it has the shifted (f7) key to enter the monitor.i push it and that is what happens! i have tried many things!i just bought your machine language book for starters and i have not been able to do anything with it yet because of the problem i am having!please help me!
Buttrfield: Sounds like a bad computer (likely a bad ROM chip) to me. Get service. (You DID remember to command BANK 15 before hitting shift/F7, I hope).
Questionon the 128 with 1702 monitor, will an adapter cable for40/80 column work in color or just monochrom
Buttrfield: With a 1702, don't hope for 80 column color.
QuestionWhat can I do to expand RAM on a SX-64 to have more RAM memory for M/L programs?
Buttrfield: Tough one. The 1764 may not help because the new power supply can't be fitted. You do know about putting code underneath ROM, I hope?
QuestionI got your book on machine lang. not hav doing so good do you have easier?
Buttrfield: Take it more slowly. do all the examples. Try changing things to see what happens. Hang loose.
Questionhow may i get a reasonable 1200 modem?
Buttrfield: Don't know where the best buy can be made, but they are LOTS cheaper than they used to be… …ask on the CIN Telecomms board.
QuestionCan the ram expander for the 128,be used with a interface for the SFD1001 meg dri ve they use the same port, can the be piggybacked?
Buttrfield: Not easily. Maybe someone will come up with a "mother" board to do the job.
QuestionDo you recommend any hard disks for 64's or 128's?
Buttrfield: Don't recommend, exactly, but a few are around that work OK. Depends on your application. Check to see if it's your monitor or your computer. Video chips do need service sometimes… …if you can live with it, you might prefer to do so. (Never heard of that one before).
QuestionSometimes the first column on my monitor fades out when I'm using my C64 When I shut down and wait then turn it back on it usually takes care of it. Is this a major problem or is it relatively harmless?
Buttrfield: (that was the question answered above) Yes, they usually show up in a couple of weeks.
QuestionCan I get a transcript of this session?
Buttrfield: (answer above again)
QuestionHow on the 128 do you use the 40 colomn mode on cp/m, it always seems to be in 80 column and you have to scroll over to read it all.
Buttrfield: You can boot with the 40/80 key up; that's the easiest way. Sorry, let me correct that. CP/M is ALWAYS working in 80 columns… …if you use a 40-column monitor, you must live with the scrolling… ..if you get hot on CP/M, go to an 80-col monitor and you'll be in business.
QuestionAny idea what the 1581 will cost?
Buttrfield: Darn, I'm not sure if Commodore have quoted a price. Think I heard about 30%-50% above the 1571.
QuestionHow can we let Commodore know our dissapointment with their – service and lack of support!
Buttrfield: When in doubt, write the president. He'll know who to give the letter to.
QuestionWhat microprocessors are used in the C128, and do you think it is easier to program in ml on those micro's?
Buttrfield: The 64/128 side uses a cousin of the 6502/6510 called the 8501… …it's identical to program as compared to earlier chips. In some ways, the built-in MLM makes things easier… in some ways, the more complex architecture makes it harder… On the CP/M side, the processor is a Z80, which is a little harder… to program than the 8501, but not much (different style).
QuestionHow much will you guys be cutting out of the AMIGA 1000 to make the 500?
Buttrfield: Hey, I'm not with Commodore. So it's "dose guys"… I suspect Kickstart in ROM, and maybe some interfaces eliminated… …but just guessing.
Questiondo you answer every question sent?
Buttrfield: Almost all.
QuestionDo you think there will be a C128 BBS that supports 2400 baud and a modem that would work with it and be affordable?
Buttrfield: It's stretching the technology a little, but it's possible.
QuestionJim..do you think that commodore will ever come out with a system that can be ranked up with others like IBM and APPLE for uses in the Buisness world
Buttrfield: Sure. They do a very classy IBM PC clone… …but I hope they never give up on inexpensive computers.
QuestionHow about NEPCON?
Buttrfield: Don't know it.
QuestionWhat do you think of GEOS???
Buttrfield: Nicely implemented and well supported. But I like to write programs… …and GEOS is a less comfortable environment in which to do that.
QuestionCan you hear me?
Buttrfield: No … LOUDER!!!!
QuestionI have recently heard about a new thing for the AMIGA to get it to run C64 programs… what is the latest on this?
Buttrfield: I've heard the same rumors … on the AMIGA board here. That might be the best place to ask.
CommentComment: Jim, your latest book of Commodore machine language has got to be THE best introduction to the subject to date. Thanks a bunch!
Buttrfield: Honest, I didn't bribe RobertB27 to say that…
QuestionWhy don't they make these forums available in Transcript form????????
Buttrfield: I think they do. I forget exactly in which area they show up, but if you ask a QHelper…
Questionwhat can the c128d do that the c128 can not do?
Buttrfield: Fit under your arm.
QuestionHow compatible is the 1541 with the 128?
Buttrfield: Quite OK. I used my 128 that way for its first 3 months. (sure makes a slow job of CP/M, though).
Questionwhen will geos be out for 128?
Buttrfield: Dunno. Seems like soon, since it was showed at CES last month.
QuestionAre you aware of the marketing problems of CBM here in the states? (Lack of support for the 128, little more for the 64 and a push on the AMIGA; inability to deliver machines with any regularity, little if any popular advertising).
Buttrfield: Hear a lot of it, and we've talked of this tonight… As users we'd like to see more and better, but we should not forget that… (1) Commodore are coming out of a financial squeeze … and surviving … and.. (2) There a many commodore people, and dealers, who really try to make an effort.
QuestionWill the 1764 work with a SX?
Buttrfield: Not sure. The power supply is the big question.
QuestionI wpould like to know the possibilities of using the 512K RAM exp. for the 128 used in a BBS. Heard anything on this or a really good IEEE interface for the 128
Buttrfield: I don't know if it's here yet, but it surely must come… …Sixth Sense 128 uses the expansion very effectively in a telecomms environment. That's it for this evening. It's been a long session… hope there was something useful in it… …for everyone. Night
