Jim G: It includes a full screen editor and some nice windowing features. Updates for existing users haven't been worked out yet.
QuestionHow is the Amiga selling?
Jim G: For the most part, the retailers can't keep enough stocked.
Jim G: I don't think C= will release real numbers though.
QuestionWill Input/Output publish an easy explanition on building your own printer cables?
Jim G: More than likely the next Input/Output will be right here on Quantumlink. However, yes I think that is something that we could write up.
QuestionHow will 1.1 differ from 1.0?
Jim G: From an end-user point of view there will be no diference. From a developers point of view, I haven't even seen the new docs. yet.
QuestionI understand dealers will be able to swap 1.0 for 1.1 at stores.
Jim G: Very possible. Contrary to past history, Commodore is planning on making this whole upgrade system as painless as possible.
QuestionHello Jim, thanks again for talking to us. Is an update planned for Abasic? Will MS basic be bundled with future Amigas sold?
Jim G: Don't know of any plans for a NEW version of ABasic. Yes, Amiga Basic will be bundled with machines starting very soon.

Jim G: No. Operating system will remain on disk.
QuestionAs CIN tranfers from Compuserve to Q-link, will Commodore-Amiga personnel help provide answers to are questions and assist in the missing documentaion problems?
Jim G: I think that is already beginning. There are a couple of "secret" C=-Amiga people who browse through the Amiga alliance, answering some questions, and making comments. That will continue, as well as the Commodore Hotline which is available for questions.
QuestionWhen will the IBM emulator, the REAL one , be out?
Jim G: The Transformer (software only) will be available in a couple of weeks. The Accelerator (with hardware will be available by Jan '86.

QuestionI haven't heard much about MS DOS compatibility lately. That was one of the things that a lot was said about early on and now I don't hear anything more. What is the scoop? Is it going to run MS DOS software or not? If so is anyone working on converting their soft- ware to 3.5" micro floppys? Also when is the frame grabber option going to be available?
Jim G: It is going to be available and everything that was claimed is true. The truth of the matter is that before the Amiga was distributed, the feature that grabbed everyone's eye was IBM compatability. Now that people have had a chance to use it they see the real story: With all the power of the Amiga do you really want to use IBM software? Frame grabber should be Jan '86
QuestionCan you guesstimate the # of Amigas in real live retail-bought users' hands as of today?
Jim G: 5-10K. guessing only of course.
QuestionWhat about business software ? Something like Super base or Multiplan in the work s ?
Jim G: Enable series (Lotus like) and the Maximillion packages. Precision may actually be doing
Jim G: a Superbase soon (heard they're already working on Super script.)

QuestionIs there going to be an AmigaWriter printer that will allow acurate repro of Amiga graphics (I.E. at least as good as ImageWriter)? If so what sort will it be? Impact? Ink jet? Laser? Phaser?
Jim G: Haven't seen a full color Imagewriter picture, however we've been using the Diablo C-150 (color ink-jet) with some fabulous results.
QuestionAre the developers allowing the use of multi-tasking so far with there products? I would think that it would be disabled as a copy-protection move.
Jim G: The Enable system is allowing it. In fact, each of their packages is available separately and can then be used together. The Maximillion stuff is also multi-task.
QuestionWill your magazines(PowerPlay, C= Microcomputers, In/Out) be covering Amiga info, programs, products etc… ?
Jim G: Certainly. In fact, we hope to be as timely (if not more so of course) on reviewing
Jim G: products and providing information than even the Amiga specific ones!
QuestionDo you believe price will drop on the Amiga after Christmas? Is Commodore planning any support for our user groups to help handle the influx of new 128's and Amiga's. I got a 128 last week. As Pres. I need to know a bit more than average about the Commodore line. Hard to keep up alone..
Jim G: Don't hold your breath for a price cut.
Jim G: We are already doing massive touring and demoing of the Amiga for user groups. In addition, Input/Ouput on Quantumlink will provide whatever additional info we can.
QuestionWill the Acellerator require the same or different software than the Transformer?
Jim G: The Transformer and Accelerator are to be used together (the Accelerator accelorates Transformer)

QuestionDoes the Amiga's architecture allow it to use the full logical address space of the 68000 via expansion (I.E. is it "fully addressable")?
Jim G: If I'm not mistaken, a 68000 can address 16Mbytes. The Amiga only (??) 8.5Mbytes. However, all 8.5Mbytes are directly addressable (no banking involved). Interseting note: the custom VLSI chips only have access to the lower 512K of RAM. Therefore the other 8M is available without DMA interrupts to the 68000
QuestionDoes CBM think the Amiga will make a dent in the IBM PC Market? How about the Mac Market? Any Bold predictions???
Jim G: We'll make dents, but they own some pretty good dent pullers.
QuestionHow do I go about getting someone to do an Amiga presentation for our user group ?
Jim G: Call Commodore and ask to speak to Pete Baczor (UG Coordinator). Be warned he is not in a lot, we're booked into January already.
QuestionI've lost one workbench disk already to the drive. It seems that its hard to see the red in-use light. Does CBM plan on releasing the disk editor that was on an early exec OS disk for use in repairing damaged disks?
Jim G: We are currently looking into releasing most of the misc. routines on early disk to the public.
Jim G: Either Public domain or dealer demos or special promos or something. Its just a matter of working out who own rights to a lot of that stuff.

Jim G: Because of the OS on a disk, any 68000 operating system is concievable (implementable, ?)
QuestionHello! I would like to no if the Amiga Can Actually play 16 Voices at once! In order to create a Good sound! (better then the 64's) Would you have to use more then one voice?
Jim G: Amiga has four hardware audio channels. Each channel cn be modified using either frequency or amplitude modulation (FM or AM). This allows you to create what are called complex waveforms that can actually contain mutilple voices. Bottom line, yes the Amiga can create 16 voices (each equvalent to one of the 64's). Instead you could use fewer voices and get "better" sounds.
QuestionCan a HAYES modem be connected to the AMIGA via a straight-through RS-232 cable? If not, what mods. need to be made to the cable to make it work right?
Jim G: Will work with a modified RS232 cable. first, the connector is 23 pin (not 25 – try to find one those at Radio-Shack!). Otherwise, its just a matter of matching up the pins.
QuestionComments on file servers, networks, LAN's and the like for the Amiga. Seems that hardware of this type would help move Amigas into the business community. And what about CD ROM'S?
Jim G: Lets just say they are being looked into. Don't expect to see anything within the next couple of months though. Interesting note #2: When running the Transformer and Accelerator, you can use the IBM LAN's
QuestionHas AmigaTutor been released? If not, when?
Jim G: Not that I know of. Soon.
QuestionWould Games such as Strip Poker or any highly graphic programs become advailable for the Amiga?
Jim G: Depends on the company. Last figures I saw put the number of KNOWN developers at about 800. Who knows what some of these people are working on?
QuestionWhy did CBM clip the audio output high end at 6KHz?
Jim G: don't know.
QuestionHow prctical is an amiga with only one disk drive ?
Jim G: It is fine. However, you will want to talk to your dealer (or friends) to find out how to install the Workbench onto other disks. Example: Abasic is much easier if you've copied it onto a disk with workbench installed.
QuestionI would strongly recommend that CBM- Amiga include the Dos manual with all future machines. It is really impossible to use the machine without CLI documen- tation. How could anyone use a computer without knowing how to get a disk directory?
Jim G: Ah, hackers. There is a class of computer users who only want to know how to insert their
Jim G: software and make it run. If a directory is needed, the software should provide it. This is the level that the machine's manuals are aimed at.
Jim G: Note #3 (not extremely interesting): It is recommended (official and all) that a system with two disk drives should have a minimum of 512K.
QuestionWhat about the problem with reading the The RS-232 port?
Jim G: Not aware of problem you're refering to.
QuestionWould an Amiga hooked up to a "Real" Professional Synthesizer… Such as the Yamaha DX-7 be the "ultimate"???
Jim G: This would depend on the interface. The Amiga is not a multi-voice digital recording synthesizer/studio. It is a computer. With a MIDI interface, they would make a nice pair though.
QuestionCan "Super" graphics be put on the ing too?
Jim G: which ing?
QuestionHow can one obtain the Programmer's developement package? I am interested in writing MIDI software, but need the Lattice C, Manuals, etc.

Jim G: Anyone can build a RAM card. The T-card is only one we know of so far.
QuestionWho do you want to sell the machine to- Hackers or end users or for everyone? Then please listen to suggestions.
Jim G: Everyone want to sell to everyone. We want the Amiga to be as simple as possible to use. However the first group of people to buy any computer are the hackers. We're at a crossroads right now.
Jim G: Be patient for the next month or two and there will be plenty for everyone.

Jim G: just kidding. Look for Amiga Hardware manual for some info.
QuestionWhy is it that as a member of a users group one can get a better deal than I as a Dealer can offer?
Jim G: Please be specific. We (C=) have never offered Amigas directly to user groups.
QuestionAny cost data on the T-card?
Jim G: Everything from $400 to $995 per 1Mbyte. Somewhere between there I would assume.
Jim G: Clarification – regardless of the fact that OS will remain on disk, upgrades will be available.
QuestionWill there be more talk on Q-Link about Amiga right now there seems to be very little compared to Bytes on line service where you could stay on all night and not read all Amiga messages ?
Jim G: That's up to you folks. Someone has got to put all them messages up you know.
QuestionWill a special version of Quantumlink be available for Amiga? If so, when?
Jim G: ASCII version in early '86, specific version to follow.
QuestionI understand that if you want to add more than one disk drive, CBM will be supplying drives with built-in power supplies. Is this true?
Jim G: 3.5 drives do not require built in supply. 5 1/4 will have their own supplies.
QuestionWhat's the Group count tonight?
Jim G: We've hovered with about 20 guests

QuestionWill there ever be a ROM based OS for the AMIGA?
Jim G: Don't think so.
QuestionWill Commodore be publishing its own Amiga Magazine?
Jim G: We will be providing information in some way
QuestionR.J. Mical has uploaded lots of stuff on BIX. He is one of "YOUS GUYS" not one of "US GUYS", so please, we cant do all the support on Q-link for Amiga. "YOU GUYS" have an advantage.
Jim G: Go up, get it and move it over here!

Jim G: We've gotten lots of feedback. Over all he's behaving himself, sticking to mostly the truth and has helped to generate many sales for both C= and the local dealers (one call said that 30 sales
Jim G: could be directly attributed to his demo). Aside from sales, tens of thousands of people have gotten to see the amiga at his demos.
QuestionWhy does the speech sound gargled in 80-column mode??? ABASIC bug?
Jim G: Haven't played with that. A guess would be in the timings
QuestionR.J. Mical's docs are copywright McGraw Hill (BYTE). I'd move it over here if I Could!
Jim G: So we'll see if we can get someone up here for a night.
QuestionLooking forward to seeing your demo in our area when you get here. What can we expect to occur during the demo. I know what will happen before and after.
Jim G: Originally it was all static graphics and a little sound. As peripherals and software continue
Jim G: to arrive we're adding animations, full music and business software
Jim G: demos. If we're lucky we'll also have some video toys (Amiga Eye, Genlock and Camera)
QuestionHow soon before the release of BASIC from Microsoft?

QuestionIs the stuff RJ is posting the same info that is in the developer's manuals?
Jim G: Not if its copyrighted by Byte I hope!
Jim G: Most of it is probably the same, however arranging info as questions and answers and simples examples always makes it more interesting and easier to follow.
QuestionI've heard that the Amiga was out- -selling the ST in the US. Can you confirm???
Jim G: Total ST shipments through Sept were about 10K. (not sales, shipments) If we're 15K we're close.
QuestionWhat'a an Amiga Eye?
Jim G: This is a real-time video digitalizer (like Digital-eyes for the 64 only faster)
Jim G: plus a frame grabber which lets you save any image you get to disk. NOTE: name is now AmigaLive
Jim G: Well, I seem to be out of questions for right now, so lets talk….
Jim G: The Amiga seems to be making a place for itself in the marketplace.
Jim G: From a college of art and design which bought 16 units, to a guy in NJ who just bought it to fool around with and learn on it. The software is a little slower than anticipated but its coming. From where I sit it looks like a big tidal wave far in the distance.
Jim G: If it doesn't hit too many rocks between there and here, we should all get drenched pretty soon.
Jim G: Now back to our regularly scheduled program….
QuestionHas CBM been getting much interest from VAR's on the Amiga.
Jim G: Some. But they depend heavily on software. And it isn't there yet.
QuestionIs it selling better/less/the same as what was expected?
Jim G: The fact that we don't have enough units to keep the dealers supplied seems to imply that its doing better than anticipated.
QuestionHow soon before we see some (more) software making it's way into the market place?
Jim G: Hopefully the first real software will be out by thanksgiving. This would include all of the languages (C, LISP, Pascal, Macro Assembler), most of Infocom's adventure games, the first three or four from EA, Textcraft and hopefully a couple of other business pieces

Jim G: I would.
QuestionIs Microsoft developing anything besides the version of BASIC?
Jim G: Multiplan
Jim G: Just a comment about the dealers out there. Like everything else, there are good ones and not so good ones. Don't be foolish. If a dealer doesn't seem interested in selling you an Amiga, return
Jim G: the gesture and go elsewhere. If a dealer is complaining about how hard it is to get rid of his Amigas in stock, don't help him deplete his stock. There are some great dealers out there very good service to their Amiga customers. It may be worth your while to search them out.
QuestionLos Gatos said that the Centronics port is 25 pin. But I've talked to several developers who have 23 pin systems. ???
Jim G: If I had one here i would just tip-toe thorugh the port pins. But alas.

Jim G: I just realized that no-one can see your handle. That was SF 2 everyone. Now run to your email box and drop him a line.
QuestionIf you run into a really bad dealer, let CBM know about it. There are lots of retailers who would love to be Amiga dealers, but so far haven't had the chance.
Jim G: This is true. We can't police all the dealers, so let us know.
QuestionWill Comal be Available for the Amiga ?
Jim G: Call Len. I'm sure that off in Denmark somewhere there are three guys huddled over an amiga trying to figure out what they can make it do.
QuestionBoth my Centronics & Rs-232 ports are 25-pin!
Jim G: Well, I've think we've just about got that straight. Only the video port is 23 pin.

QuestionFor those interested, Electronic Arts has been demoing their graphics paint program called 'Delux Paint' here in the Bay Area (SF). Its the hottest thing since swiss cheese, and wonder of wonders, will support 640X400.
Jim G: Very nice package. Watch for some pretty hot deals on this software to. Apparently Commodore has prevailed a little and graphic packages are still much under $500
QuestionIt is one on the newest ones. It came in on the 3rd shipment to Computer Wave. However, the ones in production now may be made by someone else.
QuestionAs we are starting to use the Amiga for word processing and other real functions as this software becomes available, are there any serious OS problems we should know about? I.e., should we be backing up our work ALOT??
Jim G: Actually, the worst disk crashes are almost always on the Workbench or Kickstart disks. I've never had a program or data disk ever go bad.
QuestionThe Polyscope on the EA disk is not a full functioning program, it wont print out to a printer.
Jim G: I haven't tried, however be sure to define the kind of printer you're using somewhere.
QuestionThe retail price will be $80 until Feb and will go up to $99. It alone makes owning an Amiga worth it.
Jim G: EA Deluxe Paint
