Jeff CBM3: ok, hi guys.
Jeff CBM3: Let me introduce the players tonite:
Jeff CBM3: Dave Haynie, a 128 Animal;
Jeff CBM3: Jeff Porter, Mr. Modem;
Jeff CBM3: and Bob Raible, chip guy!! (an LCD widower).
Jeff CBM3: (sorry, Greg Berlin couldn't be here with us tonite.)
Jeff CBM3: but Dave can answer some of the 1571 answers anyways.
Jeff CBM3: ok, I'm going to start the first question.
Jeff CBM3: hold on, I'm kinda new at this.
QuestionIs there a way to disable autoanswer on the 1670 while NOT in terminal mode? ATS0 was
Questionsuggested, but it doesn't work. Is there a POKE that will disable device #2? Anything will do
Questionexcept pulling the plug.
Jeff CBM3: ok, the 1670 is a "smart modem"…
Jeff CBM3: and does all of the answering functions inside…
Jeff CBM3: the modem, and the computer does NOT control anything…
Jeff CBM3: except sending the modem ASCII strings.
Jeff CBM3: If you really hate the auto answer feature…
Jeff CBM3: open2,2,2,chr$(6)+chr$(0)
Jeff CBM3: then print#2,"ATS0=0":close2
Jeff CBM3: your can even use the autoboot utility to put
Jeff CBM3: this on an autoboot disk.
Jeff CBM3: There is another way…
Jeff CBM3: Go to Radio shack and get a phone silencer cord to
Jeff CBM3: keep it from ringing.
Jeff CBM3: We are aware that this is a common complaint…
Jeff CBM3: and are working to remedy this situation as fast as possible
Jeff CBM3: in future modems.
Jeff CBM3: Not sure when the cut over will be,
Jeff CBM3: but the above are two ways to get around it.
Jeff CBM3: ok next…
QuestionI have heard that the c128's 80 collumn mode can be used for Hi-Res, I can program 6502
QuestionML if need be.
Jeff CBM3: There is a hires mode to the 8563…
Jeff CBM3: it can ONLY be done in ML..
Jeff CBM3: too complicated to go into here.
QuestionWhen is the Programmer's reference guide coming out?
Jeff CBM3: It is at the publishers, not sure when it will hit the streets. Sorry.
QuestionHow are sales of the 128 going?
Jeff CBM3: 200,000+ units sold to date…pretty good, eh?
QuestionWhen I run Common Sense I have to use th the 1660 new option in the boot to get auto dial
Questionwith my 1670 1200 baud modem
Jeff CBM3: Because you have a 1670 SMART modem…
Jeff CBM3: you don't need to use the C=A function of Common Sense.
Jeff CBM3: Just type ATE1 to turn on the echo…
Jeff CBM3: Then type ATDT555-1212 to dial the number.
Jeff CBM3: C=A was disabled when using the 1670 because the 1670 can dial itself!
QuestionIs LCD completly dead? It sure would be nice for traveling.
Jeff CBM3: Yep, sure is. I wish it weren't true, but alas…
Jeff CBM3: Joins the 1572 in the VAPORware product of the year.
QuestionI tried to format a disk using.. HEADER "filename",XX using a 128 in 128 mode and a 1541,
Questionall I could get was a syntax error. Whats the problem?
Jeff CBM3: That IS a syntax error.
Jeff CBM3: The correct syntax is..
Jeff CBM3: HEADER "filename,XX",d0
QuestionRegarding the 1571, How does it treat a disk which has been formatted double sided in
Question1571 mode, which is being written to in 64 mode on the 128?
Jeff CBM3: If you use your C64 or a C128 and have a 1541 or a 1571 in 1541 mode…
Jeff CBM3: The drive may have problems since some of the programs may be on the second side.
Jeff CBM3: If you have a 1571, the solution is to power up as a 128, then GO 64, which will leave the 1571..
Jeff CBM3: in double sided mode.
QuestionAre there any other devices being developed for the C128? (ie 3 1/2" drive, uart, hard
Questiondrive etc…)
Jeff CBM3: There are no new items yet announced, but we're always exploring the possibilities for
Jeff CBM3: new peripheral devices. Got any suggestions.
QuestionMy friends 1902 has an analog rgb switch on it and I have been told that it works on the
Questionamiga. Now I hear that this feature has been removed from newer models, why?
Jeff CBM3: The 1902 and the Amiga monitor are made from the same plastic mold. The 1902
Jeff CBM3: has internal differences which give RGBI instead of analog RGB.
QuestionI am a BBS SysOp, and have been running one for about three years (1650) the BBS I
Questionworked with uses ML modem routines for Carrier Detect.. Can something be done to get Carrier
QuestionDetect? Hardware or Softwarewise.
Jeff CBM3: The 1650 DOES have Carrier Detect.
Jeff CBM3: So does the 1670.
Jeff CBM3: Switch #3 when DOWN puts carrier detect to the user port…
Jeff CBM3: just like the 1650.
Jeff CBM3: Gmork, it should work just fine.
Jeff CBM3: You should be able to peek(56577) .
Jeff CBM3: If the Swtich is in the wrong position, it won't work.
Jeff CBM3: If the S/W expects it to work like a VIC1011A and a Hayes modem…
Jeff CBM3: Then the signal is inverted.
Jeff CBM3: This is the Plus/4 problem…
Jeff CBM3: The +4 worked with the VIC1011A…
Jeff CBM3: but not with the modems.
Jeff CBM3: That is why the first 1660s didn't have CD connected.
Jeff CBM3: If they did, they wouldn't have worked on the Plus/4.
Jeff CBM3: If you still have problems, send me E-Mail.
Jeff CBM3: Thanks for your question Gmork.
Jeff CBM3: that interactive mail is quite nice.
QuestionIs this all the compatability we can ever expect? The great majority of my commercial
Questionsoftware does not run in 64 mode. Example: Flight Simulator
Jeff CBM3: You are not using C64 mode properly. When you power up and say GO 64,
Jeff CBM3: your 1571 is still in 1571 mode, and it won't be very compatible with fast load or copy…
Jeff CBM3: protection schemes. To get it real compatible, hold down the C= key when you power up.
QuestionWill the owners of older 1670 be able to get theirs updated when the change is done??
Jeff CBM3: No.
Jeff CBM3: Sorry
QuestionWhere is the 1902 monitor??
Jeff CBM3: We're making them as fast as we can.
QuestionWhen can c128 owners expect to get the rebate..it has been 11 weeks now and it has not come!
Jeff CBM3: We're not the ones to ask about this, but we understand they're back-logged and are sending
Jeff CBM3: things as fast as possible.
QuestionI sent away for the books and disks from CBM/Digital… are they being shipped yet I have not received mine.
Jeff CBM3: The CP/M stuff is being shipped. It usually takes eight weeks or so.
QuestionIs there going to be a terminal prgm for the CPM mode coming out from CBM???
Jeff CBM3: This will come in the mail if you send in your C128 CP/M registration card (not the $20 deal).
QuestionBack to the Modem. You published hardwire modifications for the 1660 in "INPUT/OUTPUT".
QuestionIs it possible to wire a switch directly on the 1670 to disable auto answer? I tried the Radio
QuestionShack suggestion and it didn't work for me. What could I have done wrong? Thanks…
Jeff CBM3: I don't know what could have gone wrong.
Jeff CBM3: Dave Paul uses one all the time.
Jeff CBM3: Did you get the phone silencer product?
QuestionAre there any changes expected for the 1571, or can I go ahead and buy one now.
Jeff CBM3: No changes…buy 'em while they last!!
Jeff CBM3: BTW, Dave Paul is the Telecom guru here at CBM.
QuestionI think that you being here is GREAT!! Is there a chance you'll be coming back again or
Questioneven stopping in now and then for the conferences held in the CIN/SIG area?
Jeff CBM3: Bill, I test S/W on a regular basis,
Jeff CBM3: But I've been working on getting all the bugs…
Jeff CBM3: out of the Vt100 program and CP/M lately.
Jeff CBM3: And until recently, I couldn't log on from home..
Jeff CBM3: since I have a 4040 and the QL disk needs a 1541/1571.
Jeff CBM3: Any chance of getting a NON long distance number out here in West Chester???
QuestionWhy was the 1572 and the LCD canned? I really wanted an LCD and put off buying the 1571 for a 1572!
Jeff CBM3: not enough $$$$$
Questionref the Header syntax, the System guide is in error then, they give an example…HEADER"MYDISK",I23,D0
Jeff CBM3: Gee gordon…(as Dave runs to a 128 to try it out…)
Jeff CBM3: Dave reports that it works fine with the IXX.
Jeff CBM3: outside the quotes.
Jeff CBM3: or with just the ,XX inside the quotes.
QuestionAre there any plans to add additional disk formats to the list of valid disk formats for the 1571 (specifically IBM PC format)?
Jeff CBM3: The 1571 as you have it is capable of reading many many different formats, including the IBM PC.
Jeff CBM3: However, CP/M only recognizes the several most popular formats for CP/M. An application program
Jeff CBM3: could easily configure the 1571 to read most any other MFM format. However, CP/M can only read
Jeff CBM3: other CP/M disks. MS-DOS uses a different directory structure, so a dedicated program would be
Jeff CBM3: required to read PC format disks.
QuestionWould it be possible to run a 2400 baud modem on the 128?
Jeff CBM3: It is possible, though not easily done.
QuestionIs there any way to get a 1571 to stay in 1571 DOUBLE SIDED mode when used with a
Questionstandard 64?
Jeff CBM3: You need to do an OPEN15,8,15:PRINT#15,"U0>M1":CLOSE15.
Jeff CBM3: Issue an OPEN15,8,15:PRINT#15,"U0>M0":CLOSE15 to lock into 1541 mode.
QuestionHow much do the 1571 disk drive share in common with the Amiga 5 1/4 drive. I would like to read 1541/1571 formatted disks on the Amiga.
Jeff CBM3: The Amiga 5-1/4 drive does not read Commodore GCR formats, which are the normal C128/C64 formats.
Jeff CBM3: It reads IBM and other MFM formats only.
QuestionDoes Commodore have a list of C128 soft- ware developers (as they do for the Amiga)? And
Questionif so, how and where can I get it?
Jeff CBM3: We're not really the people to ask. We are Engineering Hardware types. Paul Goheen at (215)431-
Jeff CBM3: 9100 may be able to answer this type of question.
QuestionOne professional s/w game program does not load in 64 mode, yet works fine with my SX-64.
QuestionHas this been reported before?
Jeff CBM3: Power up holding down the C= key. This puts both C128 and 1571 in C64/1541 mode.
Questionwhy is the respose so slow tonight?
Jeff CBM3: Sorry, we're new at QL, AND there are alot of you folks out there. We're busy puppies.
QuestionSorry but I came in a few minutes late.. If you haven't already covered it, what's the
Questionstory on using 128 in CP/M mode for telecommunications?
Jeff CBM3: CP/M modem program comes when you send in your CP/M registration card (not the $20 deal).
QuestionYou didn't completely answer my question Specifically I asked what happens when a Double
QuestionSided disk is WRITTEN to in 1541 mode. Does it screw up the bam? The bam is still on side one,
Questionso what prevents 1541 mode from seeing total available space?
Jeff CBM3: I don't believe writing causes any problems, but I don't know for sure. Disk guru Greg Berlin
Jeff CBM3: could answer but he's not here tonite.
QuestionFor dual drive enthusiasts, what do … you foresee as alternatives to the 1572 such as
Questionthird party (e.g. MSD) …single drive arrangements, etc.?
Jeff CBM3: I don't know what the third parties plan, but beware software compatibility if such a drive is
Jeff CBM3: offered. Some few copy protection schemes may run ONLY on 1541 or 1571.
QuestionWhat determines a cartrige in 128 mode. Like CBM80 does at x'8002'
Jeff CBM3: It looks for "CBM" (43 42 4D) at $8007 for a C128 cartridge. A 01 at $8006 will
Jeff CBM3: indicate an autoboot cartridge, and a COLD START vector is expected at $8000-$8002.
QuestionFor Jeff: How do I add hispeed detect to the 1670?
Jeff CBM3: You can of course detect the words CONNECT or CONNECT 1200 to prevent any
Jeff CBM3: hardware mods, but it is possible to jumper the 1670 just as some of you SYSOPs out there
Jeff CBM3: have jumpered your VIC1011A.
Jeff CBM3: I didn't put this feature on all the modems, because if you are not careful, you can blow out
Jeff CBM3: your C64/128 or your 1670 or both.
Jeff CBM3: You can also set ATV0 for terse mode.
Jeff CBM3: IE: numbers only.
Jeff CBM3: Be sure to set ATX1 for the extended response codes.
Jeff CBM3: Other than that, it requires you to void the warrantee by soldering a wire
Jeff CBM3: from pin J of the user port to pin 15 of U5.
Jeff CBM3: I don't like to say this, but we are NOT responsible for
Jeff CBM3: ANY damage you may cause to your modem or C128 if you perform
Jeff CBM3: this modification.
QuestionI just got here…could you repeat what changes are being made to the 1670 modem PLEASE!
Jeff CBM3: The analog loopback swtich will be used to disable auto answer in the future. Not sure when the cut over date is.
Jeff CBM3: Next year sometime, I expect.
QuestionAre the 256 & 512 expandsion modules available? Will they function exactly as expected?
Jeff CBM3: I'd expect them to be available some time in January. I don't know how YOU expect them to work.
Jeff CBM3: We're selling modules that add either 128K or 512K to your C128 in the form of DMA accessed
Jeff CBM3: memory. You can talk to the memory from BASIC using FETCH, STASH, and SWAP. Also, CP/M will
Jeff CBM3: configure the expansion memory as a blindingly fast RAM Disk (M:).
QuestionHow do I access the burst commands?
Jeff CBM3: I believe CP/M uses burst routines, though C128 mode usually does not. They are usually accessed
Jeff CBM3: only from machine language. The burst routines transmit large blocks of data from the disk drive
Jeff CBM3: using special kernal routines. I don't know the actual commands, that's a question for our disk guru, Greg Berlin.
QuestionREFERENCE: Flight Simulator Incompatable Sorry its not that simple, I know how to use my
Question128. Even when holding down C= key programs will not run properly. Flight simulator wont access
Questioninstruments Microprose software will not accept the use of the B key for Brakes & Bombs. etc
Jeff CBM3: We have not experienced the same difficulty. The keyboard in C64 mode is EXACTLY the same as the
Jeff CBM3: C64 keyboard; same electronics, same kernal routines, same character ROM, etc. First we've heard
Jeff CBM3: of any problems with Microprose SW.
QuestionWhat will be the future of the c/64, now that the AMIGA and the 128 have come out
Jeff CBM3: The C64 is THE entry level home computer. (period)
QuestionDid you know that the Epyx game Hot wheels is not compatible with the 128? Even tho the
QuestionEpyx manual says its for the 64/128, some "modules" will not work. (whether a 1571 or 1541 is
Questionused does not matter) The computer locks with a blank screen. (Must be playing with VIC registers again 🙂 )
Jeff CBM3: I believe you've got it. A very few programs accidently write in to the registers of the VIC
Jeff CBM3: which are unused in the C64 and RESERVED. The C128 uses two additional VIC registers. Register
Jeff CBM3: $D030 contains the 1MHz/2MHz bit (bit 0) and the TEST bit (bit 1), either of which should never
Jeff CBM3: be written to. Some copy programs like ISEPIC may unintentionally write to these registers, but
Jeff CBM3: few commercial programs do it.
Questionwhat if we lost the cp/m registration card? I think I threw it away…
Jeff CBM3: That's a big NO-NO! I really don't know what you can do; try calling (215)436-4200 for Customer Support.
QuestionWhen will the MOUSE be availabe?
Jeff CBM3: The mouse just passed FCC testing.
Jeff CBM3: Will probably be eight weeks before it leaves the factory.
Jeff CBM3: Another couple of weeks to get to the store.
QuestionI just got on. What plans are there for the dual drive?
Jeff CBM3: One more time…the 1572 is DEAD!!!
Jeff CBM3: period.
QuestionIs there any way to restart from CP/M mode on the 128 without rebooting the entire
Questionsystem??? Bill Freeman, Vice-President Commodore Assn. of the Southeast, Inc.
Jeff CBM3: If ~C (control-C) doesn't work, you'll have to re-boot. Are you a 1541 user?
QuestionIs there any possibility of interfacing a 1571 w/c64 for use as a double sided drive for the c64?
Jeff CBM3: Yes, as we mentioned, OPEN15,8,15:PRINT#15,"U0>M1":CLOSE15
QuestionIt took me a long time to figure out how to read the error channel of the disk drive.
QuestionPRINT DS$
Jeff CBM3: Yup.
QuestionIf the 1571 has an optical track 1 sense then why do the protection schemes still
Questionoccasionaly bump the head on the mech- anical stop when loading protected 1541 programs. (Or
Questionusing the 1541 fast format routines? )
Jeff CBM3: Some of these copy protection schemes re-write the 1571/1541 DOS and can ignore all efforts of
Jeff CBM3: little track zero sensor to let itself be heard. Nothing we can do about this.
QuestionWhy do my sprites get garbaged when loading in a HI-RES screen. (Still garbaged, even
Questionafter loading)? If I move them to $1600 they are there for a few seconds, then garbaged again.)
Jeff CBM3: Providing that you have already set HI-RES mode before trying to load your HI-RES screen, all
Jeff CBM3: you are trashing are your sprite pointers, which are stored after the screen in the extra text screen memory.
QuestionWhy are load rates for the 1571 so . . . different from 80 colm. to 40 colm. mode
Jeff CBM3: Providing that you mean C128/40 col versus C128/80 col, there's no real
Jeff CBM3: difference in loading speed. However, if you go to 80 column mode and type FAST, you'll load quicker.
QuestionHow well was the 1670 made compared to
Questionthe 1660 ?
Jeff CBM3: The 1670 is MUCH better – four times faster and Hayes Compatible,
Jeff CBM3: but then it's four times as expensive.
Jeff CBM3: So you get what you pay for.
QuestionHow can I read the 80 Col. screen from the 8564 Video Chip? I've tried several ways to
Questionget to the Ram portion and had no success.
Jeff CBM3: The 8564 (C128 VIC) chip does NOT handle the 80 column display. The 8563 does. However, the
Jeff CBM3: 8563 chip is not conventionally memory mapped and the machine language program you'd need to read
Jeff CBM3: its screen is too complicated for me to explain in this forum.
QuestionI'm using a 1541, and games like HULK, Q*BERT,Rescue on Fractuls do not work in 64 mode.
QuestionEven when I powe up with the C= help down! Others at my user group have also encountered this prob.
Jeff CBM3: I don't know for sure about the others, but Rescue on Fractilis has a bug in it that causes a
Jeff CBM3: write to the reserved VIC register at $D030. The folks at Lucasfilm have been told of this bug,
Jeff CBM3: which probably requires a one-byte change to the program. Since Lucasfilm programs are sold
Jeff CBM3: by EPYX, it may be awhile before a fix or patch becomes known to the general public.
QuestionIs there a way to get from C64 mode to either C128 or CP/M (or BOTH) mode(s) in Machine Language?
Jeff CBM3: Nope. Totally, completely impossible.
QuestionWhat is the Extra chip socket in the C128 for? RAM Expansion? ROM Expansion?
Jeff CBM3: The extra socket is ROM, the 23256/27256 variety. That means 32K bytes for you software types.
QuestionResponding to the 1571 formatted disk – the bam on side one is unaffected by wri ting by
Questiona 1541. The bam on side one is u sed by the 1571 in 1571 mode only.
Jeff CBM3: Thanks SLAM, I thought so.
QuestionWhat is the SYS location for Cold Start?
Jeff CBM3: I don't know offhand, but you can find it. The low byte is at $FFFC, the high byte is at $FFFD.
Jeff CBM3: Make sure you are in LOGICAL BANK 15.
Question* I may have missed this but… Is it possible to get a STANDARD MDM7 type term to work
Questionin CPM?? If not, why not?
Jeff CBM3: The current CP/M BIOS does not support modems, as modem support is not a CP/M standard. The
Jeff CBM3: new CP/M BIOS, Nov. 2 release, does support modems and comes with MDM730.COM. You get this by
Jeff CBM3: sending in the CP/M registration card (not the $20 unitoid).
QuestionJeff, when will the CP/M terminal program (that we get by sending in the C128
Questionregistration card) be available? And will it also be availble online anywhere for downloading?
QuestionThanks!
Jeff CBM3: The terminal program and new BOIS will be released as soon as it is out of testing.
Jeff CBM3: Dave and I have been using it for a couple of days, and it looks like we might have a winner!!
Jeff CBM3: Send in the Registration card that was in WITH the DISKS that came with the 128.
Jeff CBM3: (NOT THE DRI STUFF)
Jeff CBM3: Unless of course you WANT the DRI stuff.
Jeff CBM3: We're looking into downloading it,
Jeff CBM3: but it seems like a mess, cause there is a serial number on your disk and it is a licensed copy, and all that stuff.
Jeff CBM3: Best bet is to SEND IN THOSE CARDS!
Jeff CBM3: (Thank you Johnny Olson)
QuestionIs there any way to lock to 1670 into 1200 baud for systems that answer at 300 but are capable of 1200?
Jeff CBM3: Not sure exactly what you are trying to say…
Jeff CBM3: but if you call at 1200, the other party MUST be at 300,
Jeff CBM3: but if you answer, you are suppose to switch if the caller is at 300.
Jeff CBM3: Sorry, no way to lock it into Answer ONLY at 1200.
Jeff CBM3: This is suppose to be a FEATURE of 1200 baud modems.
Jeff CBM3: Talk to Ma Bell if you have any complaints.
Jeff CBM3: (try Parsippany, NJ)
QuestionHaving my computer on for most of the day I couldn't help notice how COOL the computer and drive remain. What was done different?
Jeff CBM3: Chalk it up to Swtiching power supplies. You'll have to buy a foot heater now.
Questionwill a ram drive be able to be made from the 512 & 256 expansions? Easily?
Jeff CBM3: Well, CP/M (as of NOV 2) supports the RAM expansion as a ram disk (M:) automatically. For C128
Jeff CBM3: mode a RAM disk program would be required, which could be written in assembly language rather
Jeff CBM3: simply but not necessarily compatible with all C128 software. Though C128 mode supports FETCH,
Jeff CBM3: STASH, and SWAP in BASIC to let you use RAM expansion, and application programs can use one as
Jeff CBM3: they choose, either disk emulation or expanded memory.
QuestionHow do you 'Jump SubRoutine' to a Kernal routine from a Machine Language program? Are my
Questionquestions getting through? I've seen some questions get answered and then someone says could
Questionyou please Repeat that, Meaning that they got through right away.
Jeff CBM3: With the Kernal in context, you can simply JSR to Kernal routines from assembly language. If
Jeff CBM3: you work with banked Kernal, you'll need to use the Kernal routines JMPFAR and JSRFAR (or something like that). I'm not intimately familiar with the Kernal, so I can't describe the exact parameters that these commands require.
QuestionIs there any hardware mod to allow the 1670 to receive from a Hayes compat modem at a
Questiondifferent baud rate than the send baud rate – receive at 1219 – send at 1200 ?
Jeff CBM3: The computer to modem data rate is 1200, but the modem to computer data rate is 1219.
Jeff CBM3: You really can't change this…it's a Bell System Standard.
Jeff CBM3: Again, try AT&T at Parsippany, NJ for details.
Question:: Is the 128's CP/M a banked or non-banked version of CP/M Plus (3.0). In other words, does it use the full 128 K ?
Jeff CBM3: It's a banked version.
QuestionWhere is the best memory area to place M/L to be used by a Basic prg? Would it be Bank 0 above Basic text?
Jeff CBM3: You could store it above BASIC text, providing that you stored it sufficiently far above BASIC so that changes to your BASIC program wouldn't interfere. There's always the Cassette buffer, the RS-232 buffers if your not writing a telecommunications program (512 bytes), and there's some unused free space at $1800 (below BASIC).
QuestionAre these questions being re-written? Or asked diferently by different people?
Jeff CBM3: Differently by different people. NEXT!
QuestionThe 1571 manual did not give the address of the bsout vector and was very unclear about more than that in burst. How do I get a hold of Greg Berlin?
Jeff CBM3: Greg Berlin can be reached here at CBM in West Chester. You can also find him (or many of us
Jeff CBM3: others) at the Courtyard Inn on RT.100 & RT.202, or at Margarita's off of RT. 3. Just make sure you buy the drinks.
QuestionAt MARCA there was a setup with the world revolving and moving up and down on the screen quickly(animated). Was this done with a RAM disk, etc. Explain?
Jeff CBM3: Yes, sure enough. The RAM EXPANSION MODULE is not just a Ram Disk, it is a high speed memory transfer device capable of moving data at up to 1MByte/Second (real fast). The globe demo and
Jeff CBM3: several other are on a disk that will come with this module.
Jeff CBM3: They're all written in BASIC.
QuestionI have found about 7 programs already that are not running in 64 mode with the drive in 1541 mode too. This excludes all the good copy programs which do not work at all telling the user that there is no 1541 on-line…not fun.
Jeff CBM3: The copy programs (COPYQ-II, etc.) that tell you there's no 1541 on line would work fine with the
Jeff CBM3: 1571 EXCEPT that they check a list of known 1541 ROM checksums, and if they don't find the ones
Jeff CBM3: they know, they assume that they don't have a 1541. These programs dug there own graves; they're
Jeff CBM3: not even necessarily going to work with all versions of the 1541.
QuestionHas Commodore stoped making the C= 64 ?
Jeff CBM3: NO.
QuestionJeff, are you online here because you are the fastest typist, or because you're the
Questioncutest? 🙂 (Of the gang there, I mean.) Thanks for a great CO!
Jeff CBM3: Jeff types faster, but its me, Dave, who's cuter!
QuestionNo, I'm not a 1541 user.I use the 1571 with my 128. Is there no fix, (hardware) to reset
Questionfrom CP/M? Why did it matter if I were a 1541 user? Thanks! Bill Freeman, VP; CASE
Jeff CBM3: No Bill, that's just a joke. I assumed since you complained about re-booting CP/M, that you had
Jeff CBM3: been waiting over a minute for a 1541 load instead of the 15 or so seconds for a 1571 load. What
Jeff CBM3: exactly is bombing out CP/M? CP/M programs shouldn't do that, and should listen for ~C.
QuestionSince the mouse will not be out for another three months, does this mean tha t the JANE software will also be delayed this long?
Jeff CBM3: No. JANE also works with joystick and keyboard.
Questioncan the 128 when in 64 mode, drive 80 colms ???
Jeff CBM3: Techinically, you can drive the 80 column chip from C64 mode. However, you'd have to write a
Jeff CBM3: series of ML programs to display characters, scroll the screen, and everything else that the C128
Jeff CBM3: Kernal does for you.
QuestionWhere is the C64 Kernal routines (what chip?) in the 128. Is the Kernal ROM compatible on a switch out basis with U4
Jeff CBM3: The C64 Kernal routines are in the C64 ROM (1 only) of the C128, which also contains BASIC.
Jeff CBM3: Since the C64 used two 8K ROMs instead of one 16K ROM, you can't exchange them. The internal code is identical.
Question:: You mentioned VT100 earlier when talking about testing that and CP/M. Will MDM730.COM have full VT100 emulation?
Jeff CBM3: No, MDM7 doesn't have VT100, but we're looking into MEX 1.14 as well, a terminal program that
Jeff CBM3: DOES do VT100 in CP/M.
Question:: Since the prog.ref.guide is not yet available, could you say a few words about the MMU and its function?
Jeff CBM3: Well, that a real detailed question, but a FEW words it is. MMU is always at $FF00-$FF04, and
Jeff CBM3: also at $D500-$D50B when I/O is turned on. You MUST program the MMU only from ML; BASIC
Jeff CBM3: indirectly programs it via the BANK command. The register at $FF00 (same as $D500) is the most
Jeff CBM3: important. Bit 0 when low sets I/O in place, when high allows CHAROM or RAM. Bit 1 when low
Jeff CBM3: selects BASIC LOW, when high it selects RAM ($4000). Bits 2-3 select BASIC High, Internal
Jeff CBM3: FUNCTION ROM, External FUNCTION ROM, or RAM for $8000-$BFFF. Bits 4-5 do the same thing for the
Jeff CBM3: area from $C000-$FFFF (00=Kernal). Bit six sets actual RAM bank 0 or 1.
Jeff CBM3: Well, that's the last question folks. Thanks for stopping by. Later.
